Title Talk

Kate sent me an email asking to discuss the title. So, let's do that here.

Sorry--I asked the question and then took off. Now I have to go to the dentist. I have some thoughts that I'll share then.

See p.88.

It's okay!
Let me know when you get back.

Andrew talks about the constellations on this page. How he thought, as a child, that the animals and such were real and only the large stars (pins) held them in place. He thought that if the pins came loose the creatures would be able to fall onto him and crush him.

Razi talks at the end about being a constellation.

I'm still working something out from the title too. I probably should've waited to comment until my thought was all finished.

I wondered about the title too. I always think of thin air in terms of it being hard to breathe, like in high altitudes and stuff. How does that fit in, do you think?

I have always thought of thin air as K in the mirror describes- like being in the mountains and it being harder to breathe.

I hadn't even thought of it that way! When I first saw the book I thought in terms of "out of thin air," like a magician pulls something out. It seems like "thin air" is the one thing that separates people in this novel and keeps them together.

When Andrew tells Razi about the constellations he says how he used to believe that they were real and that they might fall on him. This reminds me of the other conversation we had about Andrew and Razi. He admires and loves her, but he is also probably a little afraid of her falling on him. In addition to being unconventional and unwilling to defer her dream, she also engages in illegal activities, which puts her and Andrew in danger.
